KR&EC is a vendor for the Heartland Charter School System and offer Ecology classes for K to 12th grade students. The classes are held at local areas with interesting plants, animals, and/or habitats. Sites that have been part of the class include:
the Santa Ynez River mouth,
Waller Park,
Pioneer Park,
the Fiscalini Ranch in Cambria,
the monarch grove in Pismo Beach,
and the local “frog pond”.
Topics covered during the classes have included bird migration, food chains, fungus biology, amphibian metamorphous, monarch butterfly biology, riparian habitat and vegetation, bird identification, bill morphology, and many others. The information is gear for students of all ages and, when possible, games are included that allow the students to explore the complexities of our local ecosystems.
